Sour Milk Devil’s Food Cake

Ingrients & Directions


2 c Brown sugar
1/2 c Shortening
2 Eggs, well beaten
1 c Whey or sour milk
1 ts Baking soda
1 ts Baking powder
1/2 c Cocoa
1 ts Vanilla
1/4 ts Salt
2 1/2 c Flour

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat thoroughly. Add
flavoring. Sift flour, measure, and sift with baking soda, baking
powder, cocoa, and salt. Add dry ingredients alternately with whey or
sour milk to first mixture. Blend thoroughly but lightly. Allow to
stand a few minutes. Pour into well-oiled layer cake pans. Bake in
moderate oven (375 F) about 20 minutes. Put layers together with
chocolate fudge icing containing chopped raisins. Olive C. Leary,
