3/4 c Butter
1 c Sugar
2 c Flour
1 ts Baking soda
1/4 ts Cloves
1/4 ts Nutmeg
1/2 ts Cinnamon
1 Egg
1 c Sour milk
Cream butter until it is soft and creamy and gradually add sugar. Beat
until light and fluffy. Add flour and cut in with two knives until mixture
is like coarse oatmeal. Reserve 1 cup of this crumb for the top of the
cake.
To the remainder add sifted baking soda and spices, then blend thoroughly
with knives. Beat egg until foamy, add sour milk and continue beating until
well-blended. Add spiced crumbs and mix quickly, stirring until batter is
fairly smooth but do not overmix.
Spread into 8 inch cake pan and spread reserved cupful of crumbs on top.
Press crumbs into surface.
Bake 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes.
