Old-fashioned Strawberry Shortcake

Ingrients & Directions


1 1/2 c All-purpose flour
1/2 c Kretschmer Wheat Germ; any
-flavor
2 tb Sugar
1 tb Baking powder
1/2 ts Salt
1/2 c Margarine or butter; (1
-stick) chilled, cut into
-pieces
2/3 c Low-fat milk
1 Egg; beaten
4 c Sweetened sliced
-strawberries
1 c Whipping cream; whipped OR 3
-cups thawed frozen whipped
-topping

1.Heat oven to 450F. Lightly grease 8-inch round cake pan. 2.In large
bowl, combine flour, wheat germ, sugar, baking powder and salt; mix well.
Cut in margarine with pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles
coarse crumbs. Add milk and egg all at once; stir with fork just until dry
ingredients are evenly moistened. 3.Spread dough evenly in pan. Bake 15 to
18 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan; cool 10 minutes on wire
rack. 4.Using serrated knife, split shortcake into two layers; remove top
carefully. Carefully transfer bottom layer to platter. Cover bottom cake
layer with half the berries and half the whipped cream. Top with top cake
layer, remaining berries and whipped cream. Sprinkle with additional wheat
germ, if desired. Serve immediately.
